Looking up the ‘Wigan Flight’ from Manchester Road, Higher Ince
The first long canal basin was known as ‘Red Shale’ (don’t know why?)
‘Grey Hills’ to left (what adventures we had on there!)
Rabbit Rocks across Whelley Loop Line and Kirkless Hall farm stands out in isolation

I would say this is in the fifties or early sixties as you can see old railway shed to the left of west street and i think you can just make out the red shale tip to the rear of west street in which case it would be the fifties.I lived in west street and played all over this area as a child remember them clearing the red shale in the fifties.

My Auntie lived in West Street and I used to cut up Careless Lane past the gypsy caravans to her house. Did you go to Ince Central School, Dave? There was a David Thomas in my class; my name was Irene Griffiths and my best friend at Ince Central was Christine Shirley.

Did anyone else pinch apples from that house at the top of Careless Lane, on the left, where it joins Pennington Lane.
Also do you remember the fair where all those caravans are parked?

You can see my house from up there!

I live on West Street, down on the Pennington Lane end, back to back with Falkirk Drive. That is a fantastic photograph.

Not the same David Thomas, but thanks for replying. I'm sure you have good childhood memories of Ince as I have.
