I am trying to date this! when did pendleburys becme debenhams?

Comment by: irene roberts on 23rd November 2010 at 16:31

Pendlebury's was Debenhams in 1948, Gerry. I'm not being a know-all...I worked there from 1973 to 1976 and we were taught that in Staff training. They kept the name Pendlebury's because Wiganers were used to it. I know it was still known as Pendlebury's when I was a small child but I can't remember when they changed it officially.I'm sure someone will know.

Gerry, just realised it actually says it's 1978 on the heading to the photo.

I remember it too Irene, but cannot remember when it changed. The christmas lights on the building always fascinated me because they "moved" such as a clown juggling, the lights went on and off in sequence to give the illusion of movement

did its name change when it burnt down and then rebuilt

Does anyone remember when Rumbelows was Nimans? My wife worked there from leaving school until 1955 I remember going down to pick her up from work, so that we could come home on the bus together. Here are some names of the staff at that time Hilda Clare, Alice Hutchinson, Barbara Crompton, Barbara Dainty, Mrs Brindley, Clara Walls,Eileen Alker, Kathleen Fowles, Joan Hitchmough. Can anyone remember any of these or relate to them?

Officially changed in 1974. I worked there too!
