The man in the centre looks like Jimmy Ashcroft to me,he was my dads cousin. Im sure his son Keith would know. I might be wrong but I remember him coming round with a slege like this in that bad winter, I think in the 50s.
That certainly reminds me of Jimmy Ashcroft. Was he a cobbler with a wife called Clarice?
I used to play with Keith in our back yard, a few doors away.
1st comment for Jean. That photo was taken in the winter of 1941.I believe they were dilivering coal to the cottages in Springs Road.Dad Jimmy in the middle, Grandad Tom on the right and Fred Allen of Allens transport Shevington on the left.
2nd comment to Bernard.Dad Jimmy dealt coal and ran the farm at Orrell Post (now the Rivers Street estate. The cobbler and shoe repairer was Jim Farrimond and aunt Pat had the drapers shop next door.Long time since we played round the backs.
Correction, it was the winter of 1940 not 41
Fred Allen was my Dad's cousin, the Allen's still had transport business in the 1970s.
Any relation to my family of Ashcrofts? Ellen Ashcroft was my great great grandma who’s parents owned surrounding Orrell land lived at one point in the stone house between lights and Abby lakes, they also built the Ashcroft terraces to the side of the stag car park
My family also had coal rounds Orrell/Kitt Green and did haulage, in the 50s was based bottom of city road(H Ashcroft and sons) Thomas Ashcroft one of the sons was my grandad. My dad was Arnold Ashcroft, is there any linkwith the men in the picture
Hi Paul Not been on the site for a while so didn`t see your comments and ? Ashcroft terrace is to do with family but not the Ellen you mention. Your dad Arnold Grandad Tom (my cousin)Great granddad Harry (my uncle married Ellen). On the sledge the person on the right is your great great granddad (my granddad). the one in the middle is my dad(brother to your great granddad). the coal business was H. Ashcroft & sons. So by the family route we are related
