Wigan Album

I have never seen a photograph of this statue with the flag and gun. I am told it was removed and put on a rubbish tip by the railway line in the park and can't be found. I have also read that someone is hoping to put another one there - hope it is the same as this and good luck to them. It is part of our history that men from Wigan at the end of the 1800s were sent to fight and be killed in South Africa.

One of the people responsible for taking the soldier statue down was among others a Wigan Councillor named Brogan ,long since departed , I did hear that it was buried in the compost tip at Mesnes park, What a bad mistake .
