Opposite Hindley Hall. Licensee in 1838 was Thomas Hampsom. It was also called the Cow and Two Calves.Thomas Tipping was tenant in 1899 and fined 40 shilling for permitting drunkenness.Pub had a Full license until 1937 then no more.

A copy of this photo was in Hindley library, dated, I think, 1901. The boy standing outside is possibly Harry Burtonwood, born 1890: son of Sam and brother to Jim and Tom - all pitmen. Harry married Jane Hodson and lived at 217, Leigh Road.
