Brilliant picture and what an excellent anecdote! I used to live down Miry Lane in Wallgate in the 1960's. First house my Mam & Dad bought and they pulled it down, put them off for life and we always lived in a council house after that.

My mate Kath Heyes (nee Earlam)lived in this pub in the 1960's. Her Dad, Arthur Earlam was the landlord at that time

Where was this pub? I remember a Golden Lion, next door to the Raven, but can't remember this pub.

Wasn't it where the HSS hire shop is now, opposite from where the New Star Inn was and a bit lower down from what was B&Q and is now a camping and outdoor store?

There were two golden lions in wallgate the golden lion inn & the golden lion pub,the golden lion inn was as Cyril says near bottom end just before pottery rd.& next to a place called Peters woodyard.does that bring back a memory or two.

How daft is that!, "I used to live down Miry lane in Wallgate"

Wallgate is the name of a ROAD in Wigan. If you lived 'down Miry Lane', then you lived IN miry Lane and not in Wallgate.

eric is correct . The Golden lion was on the corner opposite the woodyard.. next to the woodyard was The Bridgewater pub.corner of Bridgewater st.. landlord was Bill and Elsie Hartley

Was it on the corner opposite where Middleton & Woods was?

Comment by: Allan Wood on 15th September 2009 at 15:02

i thought they were called the top and bottom lion locally

The Golden Lion in Wallgate was on the corner of Alker St I believe. The Golden Lion near the Raven was, with the Big Lamp, one of 3 adjoining pubs.

The older man in the photo is my great grandad. I'm Victors granddaughter
It's lovely seeing uncle Eric as a young boy. My granddad used to say Eric could make any piano sing. I only ever saw him in action at the dogs for a sing song. Finding this has made my day.

If this is the Golden Lion Pub in Wallgate, in 1839 my GGgrandfather stole a bottle of Brandy was caught and was transported to Australia for 7 yrs he then married and had and still has a large family here Cheers

Hello Eric, Firstly Thank You for sharing your photo. You might find this hard to believe, but it was my John Melling was my GG Grandfather, he met and Married Mary Wynn from Ireland, they had 11 children, There is a large family now, in Australia you are very proud to have a convict in the family. There is much more, if you are interested, would very much like to know more about that time, I have a copy of the trial of John as well. Cheers for now. Shirley Dorse Welland.

My three times G Grandfather at 18 was arrested for stealing a bottle of Brandy from the Golden Lion Inn 1839, he was chased by police dropped the bottle was caught charged with theft and sent to Australia for 7 yrs, and never got back there, his name was John Melling... Just thought it might be of interest, no one has been able to establish his parents in all that time out here in Australia. Cheers Shirley Welland.

JemmyH are you from round these parts? The area was known as Wallgate and Miry Lane was in Wallgate! Pedantic poster alert
