Are the iron railings enclosing an old pit shaft I wonder?

Yes, it's one of the Rylands pits.
The new college building now covers that area.
Good photo Ron!

Yes John. The shaft was there until the late '70s, early '80s.

Forgive my ignorance, just how do you "get rid" of a pit shaft? How "permanent" is its removal?

We built a bonfire by this shaft every year during the 70's .Happy days

We use to play football on Rylands field. In the 70's they built a brick wall around the iron rails. I was told they could never build there as there were so many mine workings underneath!

red clogs lived down the shaft or so we were told

The Shaft was capped with a very thick reinforced concrete slab. Nothing is built over the shaft - only outside parking
