My father, Bill Cowen (verger at Wigan Parish Church for 60+ years) was born and brought up in York St ( No 29 on the left in the picture) as were his pals - Chris Walsh and Stanley Haslam.
We lived at 30 York st East about 1958, i remember Appleton St that ran along the top of the street and a little shop that Mary Johnston had and her sister Peggy, there was a pub in George St called The Queens, the Smith family ran it and i remember Carl, there were pubs everywhere in them days.
can anyone remember a shop called sharpels around that area
Sharples shop was on the opposite corner of the Queens pub in Great George St.There was a short street that ran between Great George street and Clayton St.
look at all them stone flags worth a fortune
The Street was Fairhurst Street between George Street and Clayton Street I well remember Sharples Shop on the Corner but if you went back towards Wallgate there was Addison Street, Mill Street, And Brown Street providing a link between those two Streets,Also going up was Wrights Chip shop on the corner of Appleton Street and George Street on the other side was Harry Bambers Shop further up same side was McMahons Shop. Cross over to Matties Chip Shop then Knowles/s Toffe Shop back over other side was Dyers Pie Shop Yes Great George Street to give it its correct Title was one of the Longest Streets in Wigan.Nostalgia Yes I called in all those Shops over a period of time We lived in Addison Street
I lived at 14, York St. East, until 1949. It was about 1/2 way up on the left. No concrete lamp then, they were all gas lamps. I have a pic of a May Queen taken higher up the street, taken about 1947. I will try and get it on here

My dad was brought up at No 7 York St East and my grandad lived there until he died in 1944 while my grandma lived there until about 1962 Her sister lived next door but one at No 11 They moved to new bungalows next to one another in Newtown when they pulled the houses down. I loved going to stay with Grandma in school holidays. Great memories
j, this street is York St East. I was born at no 14,in 1939, approx.opposite the address you gave, and lived there from 1939 to 1949. Mr.and Mrs Atty lived opposite to us, and had 2 doughters, Joyce and Marion,Marion being the youngest.Marion used to push me round in a pram as a baby, and also changed my nappies! Mr and Mrs Atty moved to Hamilton Sq. Off Scot Lane, Newtown, around 1960. I used to visit them, and also Marion when she married, and moved to Shevington. Her and Sid, her husband, had a son, Alan, who me and my future wife Pat, sat in with Alan, so that they could have an evening out. Sadly, we lost touch over the years, but I think of them often. If this is your family, please get in touch. Brian, who runs this site, has my e.mail adress
