The gas lamp has an automatic timer (the round thing like a tin can). I remember these being installed when we lived at Holme Ave around 1950. Before that, we had a lamp lighter who went round on a bike with a light on the end of a pole.

A wonderful photo, I remember those sort of light columns, though I think they had been converted to electric when I was a youngster in the '50's, folk still called them gas lamps though. The street is a lot different from then, now its got cars parked both sides of the road from top to bottom.

The man on the right of the picture, is outside "Uncle Joes" house. He was my aunts uncle. Aunty lived at number 22 Hodges Street in the 1950s. We lived next door at number 20.(on the right in the far distance)
When we moved out in 1965 the lamps were concrete posts and the road was tarmac.
