That photo is unbelieveable. It just goes to show that even though some things may change, some landmarks don't. I don't live in Wigan at the moment, but miss the simple things like recognising places that you grew up with and took for granted. Further up from the picture was a bowling green and grass tennis courts (In Wigan, not Wimblebon !)
We had a summer comp there one year (us lads from Scholes). Johnny Woosey won I remember, cos he had a colour telly and watched it all the time - Happy days, happy days
The most striking difference is the greenery - one of the best things to come out of modern Wigan - the addition of more trees. Hope for many more.
it was weird seeing both pictures. In the 60's my gran lived in Howard Street and I went to St Georges School. She used to come and get me at lunch time and walk me up the brew and back down again afterwards. Brings back lots of memories, cheers Art
I recall, after seeing the other pic, taking that one when I was hangin'about, waiting for Mrs Art to finish her bowlin'match................Which she won..;o)
What great memories, I live in Australia now but grew up in Scholes, first in Windmill Close , then Mannion House , my friends would often go for a walk to the bowling green.
