Excellent pic Norman - shame you are not sure which st though - anyone else know ?
I have got a feeling it may be Lime Street. There was open land to the top, this was behind the old picture house in Scholes. Most sure its not Morris St; and definately not Gilroy St. Gilroy St is still standing. It has Vauxhall Rd at one end, and Scholefield Lane at the top. There was, and still is no 'spare' land. If this is Lime St, it is still in the same place. The old terraces being replaced by 'dutch houses' in the 60's.
Lovely evocative shot - especially the old 405 X aerials!
My husband thinks it may be Lime Street too.
It's depressing enough for it to be Lime St. I was born there but we moved away when I was three years old.
Thank You! My dad took me there as a kid from our home in Essex. I took the photos and remember him telling me that this was where he was brought up. He only lived in those 3 Streets in Wigan, so Lime Street it is then!. I have added the last picture I took; I imagine it was close by? Best wishes Norman
Love your photo's Norman.Your latest photo of Longshoot solves the Lime St.? issue.I wish I had a fiver for every time I walked down the cobbled path on the right on my way into town.Your view shows the left hand side of Longshoot coming from Scholes.
Lime St,I`m sure.I had a schoolmate at AllSaint`s named Jack Fisher(Ex St.George`s)I wonder what happenned to him
Many thanks for putting this photo online, my great great grandparents lived in Lime Street from the 1870's onward, great to be able to see what it was like.
My Mum was born on Lime Street, Number 92. Pauline Clarke she was called. There was 9 children. Tony,Alan,Linda,Pauline,Denise,Stephen,Anne,Irene and Joyce. My nan and grandad were called Thomas & Joan Clarke. Anybody known them ?
Definitey not Upper or Lower Morris Street or Lime Street. No one in any of those streets had a garden.
My grandad Isaac Tymon lived at 9 Woods yard, off Lime st. Can anyone remember Woods yard?
this is not lime st morris st or gillroy st I lived in school st next to lime st
I think this is Longshoot top of the brew taken from Longshoot Court across the breyed the big shed at the right of the houses was owned by a remove company think is name was Ernie? he had a lazy eye also had a brother who he worked with.
looks like longshoot with the cobbled brew down to wigan on the right - the fence is similar to that in the Jem Glover photo but opposite view ie bowling green is behind.Removals men were Heatons I think - Fred and Ernie who had a bright red Bedford van and lived on main road. - spent many happy hours playing in the canvas covered van with their nephews Reg and David. remember playing in the deserted houses before and during demolition- no elf and safety then - the parked up bulldozer was a real magnet.happy days - where did they all go?
Definitely Longshoot.
End house at the side lived the Garry's
1st house in the street - Lucy & Freddie Laithwaite
2nd house - Jem & Tizzie Horrocks
3rd house - The Gibsons.
Further down the street lived the Blan and Ashall family's.
Lots of memories! of happy times playing on the "breyd"
I was born at number 32 lime street Scholes in 1950. I visited there yesterday 18/2/2022 to see if I could pinpoint the site of my old house/home. There are many signs of the age of this area' a steep cobbled path from longshoot to where Lime street would have been is a prominent feature. I vaugely remember the Breyd. Can anyone help with photo's or memories? Thankyou.
