I took this photo from the top floor of the Wigan Mining and Technical College around 1960. It's a pretty poor photo but does show a few landmarks that no longer exist. Apart from the few buildings in Millgate there is, and you'll have to take my word for it, the Wigan Central railway sign in Station Road, alongside the advertising hoardings, seen as a white patch to the left of the station's sign. Further along I believe the top of the "Reading Room" or as I knew it the "Childrens' Library" can be seen at the end of Station Road. The bend in School Lane or is it Warrington Lane? where it turns into Hardybutts, where I believe, the lodging house was situated, can also be made out. Very faintly, in the distance, the spire of St Catherine's Church is also just visible but the Church of course still exists.

Poor picture Keith? I think that its a wonderful glimpse into the past. I was 6yrs old when this was taken, thanks for the memories and please post some more from this era if you have them.

Do you mean that rather large Highland Westie, created from the smoke of a nearby chimney I think?

The Lodging House, on the corner of Warrington Lane & Hardybutts, was "The Royal George Common Lodging House". Mainly vagrants, sleeping on the line..;o)
There was another at the bottom of Millgate/Chapel Lane, call the "Borough Model C.L.House"

This is one of the best pictures I have seen on here. I keep coming back to look at it and see something new everytime. Excellent

Thank you for those very flattering comments. I have to tell you that this is a negative that is so "poor" that I've kept it stored away for the last 48 years since it wasn't worth trying to get a print from it, but by the wonders of computer technology we can see something and thanks to Wigan World for giving me the reason to try.

I find it striking that the sun appears to be shining through in spite of the black and white and the gloom of industry. You can almost feel the day with this photograph.
