The police had escorted it the wrong way to were the photo was taken on cemetery lane. The reason it was left there for nearly a week was because one tractor unit could not pull it over the steep incline onto the railway bridge also the bridge had to be examined for any damage by railtrack as there was a weight limit on it.They eventually towed it over the bridge using two tractor units.
I saw the outfit pass my vicarage, which was unusual as they were always routed to approach the Branch entrance from the south, through Spring View. Even more surprising was its turn down Cemetery Road.... I didn't spot a police escort - though there was a police motorcyclist with it when I'd grabbed my camera and made my way down Cemetery Lane to record what happened next.
No time now - but I'll root out and scan some pics later.
re the load it was escorted by police motor cycles and towed by one unit I videoed it over bridge at Ince Ststion ince green lane and again at Platt Bridge police held traffic whilst it came out of Liverpool Rd the tow driver had told me the route
Must have been a fair bit of driving turning right top of Ince Green Lane.
Wall to Left of photo is were we used to sit Trainspotting
Also turning right at light's in Hindley.
Used to go flying down that slope on our Trolly's if a Wagon was coming round corner from Pit, Driver's face used to change colour then give us a blasting .Didn't stop us though.Lad's will be Lad's.
Anybody know when this was and how old the diesel loco was when scrapped , especially when compared to the life of the steam ones it replaced?
It's always surprised me how quick class 56's were got rid of . Built between 76-84, at a guess this photo is from about the mid noughties so this loco could have been as little as 20 years old! Of course the mgr coal trains they were primarily used for had come to an end, so this probably hastened their demise, and to be fair they were probably hammered on these duties, it wasn't called merry go round for nothing! There's still a few knocking about but not many.
