The vicarage, now demolished, was built from money left by Mrs Parry in memory of her husband, on land given by Colonel Blundell opposite the church in Victoria Street. The Rev. T.A. Davey was the first vicar to live in the new vicarage.

That old vicarage had character. Always wondered what it was - thanks for clearing that up Michael. Of course it was demolished, to build what ? .... a short row of terraced houses (which don't look half as endearing) !
Well, the planners would have to go for terraced houses wouldn’t they - given that they've overseen the demolition of 100,000 or so over the past 50 years or so !!!!
Give me strength !

The new church tower looking good, finishes the e job off nicely. I often wonder though, should the land the vicarage stood on, not have been given back to the Blundell family?

Tim, sometimes people who give land for a specific purpose do write a clause into the sale - a Covenant - which allows them to take the land back if it ceases to be used for the purpose for which it was given.
Others take the view that a gift is a gift - you give it, and that's it.
In any case, whatever money the Church (and it is usually the Diocese, in the form of its Clergy Housing Committee, rather than the Parish) may have received from the sale of the land will have been spent on the mission of the Church somewhere. In this instance, a smaller house was bought elsewhere for the incoming Vicar to live in, so the intention of the donors has been respected.
Doubtless some parishioners will not have been happy with the new arrangements....
