The two boys were my uncle, Humphrey Glover and my father, William Ardern Mason.
Humphrey Glover and his wife, Ruth later opened a fishing tackle shop next door, and Fair's Fair Trade Stores became Mason's Stores, owned by my grandmother and grandfather, Ada Lilian and William Mason, and later by my uncle and aunt, John and Dorothy Mason.
My own father and mother, William Ardern and Elsie Mason went on to become a grocers and confectioners at 40 Victoria Street Newtown, where I was born, next door to the Bethel Independent Methodist Church. Sundays at our home in Victoria Street always resounded to the sound of rousing Methodist hymns sung in full harmony.

I would collect the family shopping from this store in the early sixties twice a week. I believe the Mason's had a daughter, Janet, whom I new very well. I had no idea that the history of the Mason's and this store had such an extensive history. Interesting photo, interesting post, thanks Michael.

A wonderful photo. Seems there is nothing new under the sun. Fair Trade Stores, perhaps not quite in the same way as we think of Fair Trade today but must have been quite a slogan for the shop back then. I love all these old pics, thanks Michael.

This is just what Wigan World is about. What a wonderful photo of times gone by. I would love to walk in that shop, just as it was then. Old shops fascinate me. Thankyou for posting.

Humphrey Glover senior had two sons, Humphrey and Adrian Glover. Adrian and myself served our time as apprentices at AT&E (Plessey)which was behind the fishing tackle shop.
Happy days.

In response to the queries about where this shop is, please note that it is in the area of Newtown once known as "Union Bridge". The premises is now Newtown Chiropody Clinic, just across the road from the pharmacy.

Did this shop not become a Mace store run by the Masons? Also was the fishing shop next door?

Comment by: Michael Ardern Mason on 23rd April 2023 at 13:13

The shop became Spar shop run by the Masons. The fishing shop was next door.

My wifes grandad had the butchers van he used to deliver meat locally from the shop a few doors up, Ernie Farrimond was his name.
