Among the families bombed out was the Winstanley family, Grandma Winstanley and four daughters who were provided with temporary accommodation in St Catharine's Church vicarage. The family later moved to Spring St and daughter Alice married James Darbyshire at St Catharine's Church. Alice's son Peter lived in Leader St and later had children Isobel, Doris (who lived there all her life until she died in 2010) and two sons George and Pete. Peter served in the army during WW2 in Malta then Greece where he was captured and transferred to Germany as a prisoner of war. Just before the war ended he and four others escaped and managed to get to the Americans who repatriated him serving the rest of the war in Yorkshire. Peter married Edith and he lived a long and happy life and were regulars at St Catharine's church and Peter was a valued helper in the 5th Wigan Boy's Brigade. Peter died a few years ago.

The picture is of the backs of the houses of Leader Street and Lorne Street, just behind Cecil street. Our house being one of those still standing and the ones in Cecil Street also still intact.

Great photo JohnAlan and very interesting local information. Tom if you go to http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=8&id=12573&gallery=ZEPPELIN+RAID+1918&offset=0
you will see just where the bombs landed in Wigan - I think the total killed was 7 and not 5 as I stated in that posting.

I was brought up very close to Cecil Street and the picture is interesting. But I can't figure out what I am looking at. To which street do the buildings in the background belong?

Fabulous picture John, I am sure my mum and dad would have loved to have seen them.
