I reasonably sure that this Miillgate ,just before it meets Scholes.
This photograph is already on the site It's the Douglas Tavern taken at the corner of Harrogate street Millgate and Scholes.
I don't think it's the same. The tall building in the other picture has 2 doors and is 3 windows across. Plus the lower building is not the same. Nice pic though.
think thats just under scholes bride to your left ans where it runs into Chapel lane going up to your right....photeo taken with back to the pub ,,name just escapes me at present
I think you are correct Thomas.
This is a continuation of Chapel Lane leading on to Scholes,it's almost facing the entrance to the baths.
Where would the baths be, Tom?
Tom
Look through places in the album, Chapel Lane, Douglas Tavern.
this is the bottom end of Millgate se book on Wigan
this is chapel lane and darlington st the other way is king st
I know the photo is already on ww Ron, I put it on a couple of years ago, but I thought the resemblence would fire a bit of interest seeing as how there is a likeness to the other pics, sorry
I can't suss out where this is but it is a fantastic photo, aitch. Are the black buildings houses.
this photo was published in a book in the 1970s in B&W and was described as Chapel Lane.
This photo was published in a book in the 1970s and described as ebing at Chapel Lane.
I think the building on the corner covered in posters is the Palace picture house.
I'm just looking at the photo in the book I have and it says, the view is of the corner of Millgate, Douglas Street and Chapel Lane with the pub on the corner being the Douglas Tavern, the dark coloured buildings to the left of the pub are named as Doris Finch's rag shop
Roy,I think the Palace was where Brocol House stands now.
Aitch. Did Chapel Lane cross over Darlington Street,at its Junction with King Street, towards Millgate? That was where the old fire station was situated, and on the opposite side to the fire station there was a pawn brokers, with an entry at the side giving access to Harrogate Street. Next to the fire station was the back entrance into the police station.
Your probably right Maureen. I remember going to the Palace in the late 40s, first with my dad, then on my own. I seem to remember a large alley on the right of the building with a vaulted roof that went slightly downhill to a side door on the left which led to the front stalls .Tom Mix and Roy Rogers were the resident cowboys. Twopence halfpenny entrance fee.
Maureen and Roy, see Album, Work, Cinemas and last photo.
I think you may be right Albert, to the left of the picture place wpoud be were the fire station was, I think.
Thanks Ernest. Didn't know that photo was there. Brings back memories, albeit faded and not what they were.
Thanks Ernest..I hadn't thought of looking at photos of cinemas either..am going back to have another look.
Well done Aitch. You have created a great thread/picture that has caused a lot of confusion. A short distance to the left was Scholes bridge. The street between pub and large building was Douglas St. Old Wigan baths was across the road facing the pub. Chapel Lane started at the large building which was a printers in the 50/60's. Come on HarryC confirm this, I believe you worked in this building?. What was it before being the printers?.
Am beginning to wonder if it is possible that the old address of 3 Chappel Lane could have been very close to this location? My grandma lived there with her parents at the turn of the last century. Daisy wood school teacher.
Am I going to cause more confusion. Jack, where was the the Horseshoe pub in relation to this photograph, or is it no where near this location?.
Albert - The Horseshoe pub was around the position the picture was taken from, on the corner.
Sheryl - I feel sure that odd numbers were on the Fire station side but unsure if there were any houses before the Fire station.
Jack, the old Wigan public baths, opened on 29th May 1882, was on the left hand side of Millgate as you go up from Chapel lane end. This is confirmed by photo #18731 in Album, Places, Millgate, first on 4th row.
