These were proper prams! You simply made trolleys with the wheels when the pram was surplus to requirements! This photo was taken in 1953

This was common sight in those days, young girls would ask if they could take baby for a walk, something I don't think would be allowed today.

The Halt sign also take me back, this and the Slow Major Road Ahead, ceased in 1965, to be replaced by Give Way,and Stop signs.

Thomas I used to do exactly that, used to take the little boy, I think his name was Earl. He lived with his parents around the corner in Old Pepper Lane, third house on the right. My sister and I used to fight over who would take him.... I remember the prams with big wheels!!! Cheers!!

Yes Tom, I agree. The Halt sign was unusual because it was a T-shape. When the sign was completely covered in snow, you could still tell it was a halt sign! (Modern Stop and Give Way signs also have this property.)If you look at the photo of Manor St. looking in the opposite direction (towards Ormskirk Rd) you can see another halt sign but with a composite circle and triangle on top. This showed the sign was both to be obeyed and it was a warning. The Circle and Triangular forms were carried through to the new signing system as mandatory and warning signs. Nice to see Robin Park, that's probably where the girls are going with the prams.

Neil - this is the same STOP sign as in the other pic of this end of the street - the open red circle with triangle is there, but hard to see against the bushes behind.

This is exactly the sort of picture that this site is all about. Absolutely brilliant!

That would be Alexandra Park (Robin Park we still call it) behind the trees but they have all been cut down now and it is more open and very nice it looks too.

Thanks Rev David, now I see it.

I live in the house that these little girls are passing- number 17 Manor Street dated 4 years before I was born and the house was then nearly 50 years old!
