Great set of photos Stuart. I remember when the shop towards the back of the pic, with the yellow front was The Scotch Bakery. I used to get off the bus by the Congregational Church, cross over to the bakery to buy a ginger parkin before going up the cobbled alley at the side of the shop & through into Dicconson St where I lived with relatives for some time.

Just something of minor interest. The first Belisha Beacon was erected in Wigan on the corner of Mesnes Street, and became operational on July 4, 1935.(According to Wilkipedia)
