A typically wet day in the town centre sometime in the early 1900s I would think. The sign post is directing traffic to Preston and the North down Market St, not Standishgate. Why - maybe due to the trams? The direction for Warrington is towards Wallgate which is what you would expect. The scene hasn't changed all that much apart from the modes of transport, fashions and the names of shops. would the public toilets be there at the time the phot was taken?

I also would like to know why it points the way it does? Does anyone know? My understanding is that Mesnes Road wasn't built in the 1900s so that way out of town wasn't an option, never mind that a right and a left turn would have been required to get on to Bridgeman Terrace.
