I didn't now that what is now Whelley Labour Club was once a British Legion. I only knew the Legion being a bit lower down than Coop St.

Was there a Britsh Legion club on Northumberland Street as I always thought it was lower down than Bolton Street on Scholes?
and 'Water Heyes' - could someone tell me the meaning/origin of the word 'heyes'

At the bottom of Clarington Grove, extreme right on map, there is a separate building on its own, this I understand was a public house on the canal side. By the mid 1940's, as far as I know it did not exist, does anyone know its name?

i was born in harper st 1943 i never saw a pub on canal bank the builing near canal was a school annexe and near it was an air raid shelter we used to play there every day

Scholes Malc - it would originally have been hey, or heys, meaning meadow or field, so water meadows/fields.

It does seem strange because even though it was in Scholes it was still Whelley Legion, as I believe it is now. Maybe the first one was in Northumberland St. after all. As I said before, I have always known it as a Labour club and that is going back a long time, before the Prefabs were built.

At the bottom of St.,Patricks St., across Hardybutts at the back of Lizzie Green' ( Maggie Burke's) shop, the small street, not named on The Map was Manchester Place. Seems a pity that at tiny street of homes and families is not mentioned, I realise that size is the constraining factor. My uncle and auntie lived there.
