It's going downhill, so must be going towards Wigan.
the tram is heading towards the old library - headind towards pem
To me it looks like its looking down from the Enfield st side.
If you have a look at ormskirk rd in the asstd section there is a picture taken from the same pace in 1980 from around ridyard st looking towards newtown..
Definitely looking down towards Union Bridge from the Spring Bank (Carnegie Library) side.
Gorgeous old photo. I would say it's going uphill towards Pemberton. If it were going downhill, I doubt the horse and cart would have crossed in front of it. It would probably have spooked the horse. I think the tram just passed and the horse and cart then pulled over onto (its) right hand side.
uphill if it was going downhill it would say Wigan on the front
It must be coming towards Pemberton having just passed Little Billinge Rd on its left, you can see which way the electrical pole on top of the tram is TRAILING backwards. It couldnt do that going the opposite way.
The photo is taken just lower down from "Bank House" looking towards union bridge. I would say the tram is travelling up brew towards Pemberton. Looks like you can see the driver.
Now that is a sight for sore eyes! The Original Union Bridge that incorporated the rail line from Blundell's Colliery which also ran along the rear of Mitchell St, (Where I used to Live). A short time ago, A Wigan World contributor Transposed a photo of the original Union Bridge onto a recent photo, to show where it was located and how it would have looked. But this is the real thing and just terrific! Many thanks for the posting.
the man on the left has just crossed ridyard st and the horse and cart is pulling out of billinge road, the slates on the side of the house are still there today.
the pick is point backwards ie it is going to Pemberton, and the destination board says Pemberton via Newtown
if you look closely you can see union bridge in the back ground
That's going up. the horse and cart have just turned out of Billinge road
Just had a closer look, you can see Union Bridge in the background.
Definately looking towards Union Bridge from bottom of Spring Bank area , near Rydyard Street.
Yes, definitely travelling towards the cameraman, the trolley pole is the giveaway. I think that is a Hurst-Nelson tram, showing the characteristic 'sag'.
yeah the tram is without doubt heading uphill just passing billinge road to the right the large building extreme right is now long gone but the building with the two domers still stands on the corner of billinge road as does most of the other buildings on both left and right of ormskirk road
This picture is in the tramways of wigan book, i took the same picture in 1980 from the same spot(around ridyard st)take a look its in the same section as this one
Strangely, the pic appears on page 79 of The Tramways of Wigan (EK Stretch, Manchester Transport Museum Society, 1978), with the caption 'Hurst Nelson car no.47 climbing Spring Bank, Pemberton. Though only a few years old, the car has already begun to sag at the ends. Union Bank railway bridge can be seen in the distance. Mrs H Aldred'.
It's a good tip for those who like to collect others' work that they record all the available information when they make copies, so that the full benefit of later use may be passed on.
Wow the photo brings back many happy memories coming from just past carnege library 460 ormskirk road all round there became the place I played around.
Hello
Does anybody know of the Berry family from Newtown, Pemberton?
Also the Tennants who lived on Ormskirk Road?
They all moved into Pemberton late 1800s.... And had lots of children between them so I know for sure I have many relatives around!!
Thank you .
If anybody can help me with any information I'd be very grateful...
