Hi Josie, the photo was taken in York St. Wigan.Just turn left under Wallgate Bridge and you will end up in York Street.I think there's a dairy now where our house was.
My family had a grocer's shop at 48 York Street during the 1940's, it was run by my great great grandmother ellen wetherall and her daughter Bet. Does anyone remember them?
Yes I remember the Weatheralls Keeping their shop in York Steet I live on the opposite corner in York Street at no 43 their shop was on the corner of Leeds Steet and York Steet in fact their house was in Leeds Steet, opposite was a Off Licence run by Harold Tyldesley and His Wife Doris, Opposite wasd a Grocers in one part and a Bycycle Shop in the other part run by Walter Whittle. That was in the 1950s.
hi, Does any one remember my dad he was a coalman his surname was Mears, I was bon in York Street in 19655
Hello Debbie,I remember Bet Wetherall very well,my mother was a friend of hers.I can still see the shop with the open sacks of spuds and other veg in front of the counter.
Hello Albert,I remember the name Eckersley.Charlie Melling who lived next to Whittles and Cunninghams was a mate of mine. His father taught me how to swim in the deep end of the old Wigan Baths.
I am currently trying to do my family tree - their name was wetherall (see comment above). My Great Great Aunty Bet had a brother called Thomas Wetherall who I believe lived at the family home of 48 York Street and never married. He was born in 1894 and died in 1947 aged 52. I know nothing about him and no one in the family really remembers him, does anyone remember him and know anything about him.
Surely Dave you must turn right when you,ve gone under Wallgate bridge to get to York St. It,s a far cry from the Channel Isles lad!
Hi Debbie Kenyon. I have recently begun to research my family history. It seems we share our great, great grandmother. My great granfather was John Wetherall. He was killed in France at the age of 24 during WW1. I spoke with my mothers sister and she remembers Uncle Tom who was a Pawnbroker near Wallgate and lived above his mothers shop. Also that Auntie Bet lived in Standish. I'm hoping this site sends you an e-mail notification so you can see this.
i lived on york street around 1963/67 i remember them houses so well
Hi My mum had a relative named Arnold Mears could this be the same man.
