Sorry Dave. We had Pettys in Ince, proper Pettys with Chains My Cousins in Worsley Mesnes Had Toilets the ones with a Handle on the Cistern placed just behind the sit on trumpet. ours had a Cistern high up on the wall with a chain attached. It had a little parrafin lamp in it to stop the pipes from freezing. it were down the yard.. It were easy to find.. it were next to the Midden

I would say that "petty" is a Wigan slang word for the loo,bog,convenience etc and maybe your being a bit petty.
Sorry only joking but after all this is "wiganworld" not windsorworld.

Wigan was a colourful place once with many shops and a vibrant atmosphere , as this photo shows.

Nowt wrong with the word Petty, it originates from the French "petit sal" (pettee sal), meaning small room ;o)

The Sun shade over Brooks Bros? I'll bet I had pulled it out on the morning that this photo was taken, It was my job (among others) Betty Cunliffe (Scholes) was the cashier.
