In the early 1950's we seemed to have several years of heavy snow which gave the opportunity for everyone to bring out their home made sleds and hurtle down the cobbled brew of Birkett Street, often carrying on past Birkett Bank road and even onto Darlington Street East. Fortunately the traffic was much lighter in those days especially after very heavy snowfalls.
