Tricia, Bob Taylor told me he was on point duty,and a car pulled up to him and asked for directions, Bob said " I will tell you if you get off my foot.

lololol ..... :0) but I suppose it was not funny at the time. That was exactly what I was trying to remember. Thanks , Jimmy

During the War, I was learning myself to drive in a Bakers van, I had 5 bags of Hovis flour in the back from Wigan Pier,the Bobbie stopped me but when he waved me on to go into Library Street, I thought I was in gear but I wasn't and I rolled backwards into a Wigan double decker bus, no damage was done and the Bobbie waited with his hands on his hips while an embarrassed E.T.drove away.

You can see the toilets outside the bud drivers offices.

Until recently, one of the shops at the top of Library St (either what had been the old Crook and Edmonsons or the adjoining newsagents, both gone now) still had a cupboard door in the right hand side of its recessed doorway.
This was where the white point duty coats where kept.

Used to stand in Jacksons doorway courting whilst waiting for the Standish bus. Memories.

So Many Years ago, Yet fondly remembered, Fabulous photo!

This was the only anxious moment I had in my driving test. Our car had broken down the night before and we borrowed my uncles Austin A40, of course I had never been in it before the test, so I set of and followed the examiners instructions from Bridgeman Terrace to this point. There I sat in the middle of the road aiming the car down Market Street and waiting for the cop to signal go, It was very concerning when he walked towards me, you see I had pointed the top of the indicator to the right, blissfully unaware that in the A40 you pulled the bottom of the switch to the direction you wanted to go :-( The the examiner spotted the problem and asked "Have you ever driven this car before?"
Of course I had to answer no. Anyway I passed the test and lived to tell the tale and the cop went back to direct me onto Market St.
