Ron, that's a much better image. It was a p/c I hadn't seen before so I thought it a shame not to share it! I wonder if someone in Wigan bought it. Have you seen the earlier pic of Millgate ( album-places-Millgate)? The end building on the left has been painted to look black & white timbered.

notice how worn the first set of steps are, many shoes must have gone over those great photo.

Steps probably wore out quicker in those days as most folk probably wore clogs with Irons on the bottom .Just a guess

Millgate, The 2nd set of steps from the left, was number 11. I lived there with my parents and my brothers when we were children in the Forties. Happy memories.

My dad would recognise this, as he lived in the Wiend, worked in the brewery, which was down the alley, where the chippy was, and I was born in Millgate.

Jimmy, the alleyway you refer to was Burrows yard, my Grandfather George Henry Burrows stabled his coal waggon and horse down there in the early 1900’s. I do not know if there is any connection between my Grandfather name and that of the yard.
There was furniture shop on the left hand side, my father worked in there in the 1950’s

Jimmy and Sybil. Do either of you have any photos if the top of Millgate? My Nan , Sally Cunliffe, had the small shop at number 32. I’ve been trying to find some photos of that area for several years now but with no success. Plenty looking down towards Standishgate and then the other direction looking towards the old baths and Pennington’s furniture shop but nothing of the top part opposite the Wiend and the old Woolpack inn.

I just came across a picture by Ian Green of a similar scene from I would say late 1950’s early 60’s.
The first two houses on the left became The Ribble Cabinet Company the next one down Stone-Dri Shoe Bar the next taller building has no name, just a door and the next one down Famous Army & Navy.
All are now the Hadera Restaurant & Bar.

This picture makes a great contrast to the early 1960’s picture of The Ribble Cabinet Company recently uploaded on to the Album by Ron on my behalf

Sorry Graham Parkinson, I have just read your note, but I do not have any photos.
