Wasn't Douglas Street between Soho Street and the Douglas

Was this street situated at the side of what was the Bird i'th Hand pub and what is now a textile and furnishings store? I know there was a Douglas Terrace next to the river Douglas which you got to down a path at the side of Adam Bridge and the shop.

Thanks for the update Stewart. My hubby unfortunately doesn't remember your dad Alec.He does remember that John used to mate with Raymond Palmer who lived round about Frith Street and both went to Highfield School.
There is one thing that can be said for the young men of my era, they knew how to dress to impress!!!!!

I don't know this area at all, but what a lovely photo! Yes the young man looks so smart, and I love the glimpse of the two ladies with the pram and the little lad on the doorstep.

Hello
Does anybody know of the Berry family ?
They all lived on Douglas Street and Terrace over about 80 years or so?

Then some lived on Wood Street later....?
Thank you
Jane

Hi, were there two brothers - Charlie & Ben?

Comment by: Keith Kynaston on 24th July 2022 at 17:24

Hi Jane sorry only just seen your message while looking for a photo of Douglas Street for my cousin Terry Berry. I’m a grandson of Ben Berry so suspect we could be linked in some way if you’d like to get in touch.

Yes, there were two brothers, and Ben (Benjamin Thomas)was my grandfather. Anyone interested please reply to my cousin Keith or me.

Another wonderful photograph introducing us to an insight to life in a northern town.
How many streets in the Wigan area looked like the one here?
I remember a large factory being close to my grandparents' house. My grandad used to take me down to the canal to watch the old men fishing and we would walk down Spring Street and then turn into, I think, Kent Street and then right into the street which led to the canal; on our way to the canal, we went passed the old factory.
Such a shame that most of these old factories have gone and many of those terraced houses are no longer standing. Sadly, even some of the streets are no longer with us.
Referring back to the photograph, it shows how much has changed in sixty years as there are no cars parked on the street. Cars were very expensive at the time and probably regarded as a luxury item and not a necessity.
