I would say this is the thirties with the sunburst design above the canopy. I remember Lowes in the late 1950s, although only a child, and in the sixties. A friend of mine worked there as a young man and told me there was a ghost, and I believe the staff in the bank that now occupies the site have seen her. Lowe's always reminded me of Grace Brothers in "Are You Being Served?", and had such an old, traditional department store "feel" to it, with creaky floors and stairs and glass-fronted wooden counters. Broadbent and Boothroyd's in Southport reminds me of Lowes and there is also a similar store in Stornoway on The Isle of Lewis, where my daughter lives; same creaky floors and a feeling of timelessness.
