The big winter freeze of 1962/63.Construction work stopped between Christmas '62 until early March '63 when the thaw set in. Most staff were retained during this period to work on in the offices bringing up to date drawings and quantities for the senior managers. I was lucky to be kept employed being a junior.

I think this is looking south.

Much as I hate to contradict Barrie, I would be inclined to agree there Graham. The depression in the middle distance would appear to be where the M58 currently links up, whilst the high ground in the distance to the right appears to be Billinge hill.

It does look like southwards. The houses on the right are East Mount and the tiny dot on the horizon is the water tower which stood on Winstanley College.

You are right, my mistake having checked the back of the original photo which says "looking south" well spotted. 2 photos taken that afternoon.

Further to my comments correcting the photo title, you will also notice that beyond the end of the retaining walls, there are no slip roads off or on from Orrell Mount. According to the booklet produced during construction, provision had been made to link the M6 to the Skelmersdale New Town new roads which was later.Edge Wood Hall bridge (5149) was constructed was built to take this new road under the M6.
McAlpines won a contract about this time to start work on the New Town development putting in some new roads.

Those foot-prints in the snow, looks like the chap been drinking..he's staggering about all over the place.

I daresay Gazza's responsible for those footprints Alan. I have it on good authority that he's quite partial to a drop of sherry during the colder months, and it doesn't come much colder than the winter of 62/3. Can you see if he's written his name in the snow anywhere ?
