Machine is excavating material to form the cutting. McAlpines Working Ganger (Known as Johnny "the Pole"). I think this was his section that stretched to Orrell.

Thanks for that Broady, as a junior engineer in those days we just knew people by their first names. I was told informed that he came over during the war and then stayed.

Not sure on the D9 as I have been told Macs only got their first ones 1964/65.

It is interesting to note that the person shown,John Koslowski, is listed in Appendix 3 (Staff of the Principle Main Contractors) of "The Motorway Achievement" book written by Harry L Yeadon about the building of the North West of England Motorway system.(Published 2005)
