Read what it says on the wagon. Pioneer concrete, Queen St. Wigan. ' ipso facto ', Wigan related. Best get back to your cot grump, sounds like it's past your bedtime.

Looks like I should also go to SPECSAVERS as I can't see PIONEER CONCRETE on the wagon??????

Owd grump. I don't know where you have been for the last 30 odd years, that's how long Leigh has been part of Wigan..

Comment by: Sir Bob on 9th January 2016 at 09:25

Atherleigh Way is located in the Wigan Metro area, so therefore it IS Wigan related, but I have never heard of Atherleigh Way being referred to as the Lowton Bypass, although it obviously is a Lowton bypass, it is known as the Leigh & Atherton bypass, hence the name Atherleigh Way.

Dont be mean to Old Grump he's probably a bit constipated -some black molasses will cure it!

Comment by: OWD GRUMP on 9th January 2016 at 12:32

Leigh isn't Wigan as far as this site is concerned, just look how many pictures of Leigh are on the site?? Ask anyone from Leigh if they are part of Wigan..

Comment by: Garry on 9th January 2016 at 14:51

Owd Grump or is it Owd fool. Weather you like it or not, Leigh is in Wigan borough, like Atherton and Tyldesley is. Which Council empties your bins, pay your council tax, Wigan Council. Get a grip and stop spoiling this post.

'Owd Grump' is right to a larger degree, not one Leigh resident would say they were living in a area of Wigan. Politically we are related but this only came about when the Government of the day back in the early 1970s had all the boundaries re-drawn to suit themselves. Geographically we are two different towns, each with its own identity. This type of argument stretches even further, look at the county boundaries of Lancashire and Yorkshire for instance, try telling those over 45 years old who live in Todmorden that they are Yorkshire and people who live in Wigan that they are no longer Lancastrians. When the boundary change came in we were told that the old geographical boundaries would not change and if you go looking for the old boundary markers at the side of the road you will see they are still where they have been for centuries, anyone under the age of forty years living in Barrow in Furness will not remember that this town was once a part of Lancashire they will only remember being Cumbrian. Whatever we think of the pics being posted remember that they all tell a story of the area we know and these pics are now captured for the generations yet to come and will help them understand how changes have come about. I agree though that there must be some Wigan connection even if it's just the photographer or a name on a truck.

JJP Leigh merged with Wigan in April 1974.

The molasses may prove to be more effective were they to be administered intravenously veebee, along with his pedantic comments.

Comment by: Vb on 9th January 2016 at 16:33

I do sympathise with ''Old Grump' though Oz as nobody likes their boundarys interfered with!

Comment by: JJP on 9th January 2016 at 16:49

Gary, it was 1974 as you say when Wigan and Leigh came under the one political banner, I had a friend who was born in Leigh and lived there all his life but would he agree that we were related --- Never---- he would only refer to us Wigan folk as 'Pie Eaters', still, he was a great chap and sadly missed.

Oh dear, here we go again! So pathetic and childish... Stick to the picture for heaven sake.

Comment by: Caroalaen on 9th January 2016 at 17:14

JJP. Although a bit off topic I couldn't resist adding to your comment re Cumbria. To me the nicest part of the Lake District was the Lancashire part, The Duddon Valley, Consiton Esthwaite, Hawkshead, Tarn Hows - indeed all that part which people associate with Beatrix Potter. In 1975 I took a party of undergraduates from Newcastle University on a field trip to Coniston, We visited the secondary school there which still had its Lancashire County Council Red Rose sign school up (gone the next year) and it seemed so sad to me that a 1000 years of history was disappearing. As you say no one now under 40 will have any clue as to what we mean. And by the way Warrington will never be in Cheshire !!

JJP/Caroalaen, Thank you, so interesting to read. Every now and then you find gems.

Comment by: JJP on 10th January 2016 at 08:48

Mary, I fear you have missed the point of having a Album and Comments section, surely if the comments related only to this particular picture, people would have very little to say. There is a saying, 'Every Picture Tells A Story' just look at the information this plain and simple picture has gleamed. This seemingly uninteresting pic now no longer is lying in a draw somewhere not seen by anyone with little or no value. Just think for a moment ! you have been provoked enough to make a comment and that was due directly to the picture and its comments, of course you are entitled to say what you think this is what makes Wiganworld such a brilliant site to visit, read any story there is always more than one character.

Comment by: Vb on 10th January 2016 at 12:32

Put very clearly in a nutshell JJP . One picture to generate all that information. I still provide my address with LANCS before the postcode I always will!

Comment by: Ozymandias. on 10th January 2016 at 17:38

Veebee, I also give my address as Wigan. Lancs. But this isn't really about geographic location is it ? Come on, let's be honest here. What it's about is the fact that some jackass has chosen to be disrespectful. I would equate putting stuff onto this forum to having a coconut shy at the fairground. You spend half the the day putting stuff up just to have Joe public knock it down again. I wouldn't mind half as much if some of these ' critics ' would get off their fat arses and put some of their own photos on. The next photo I see credited to Owd Grumpy will likely be the first. I will endeavour not to allow the ' nay ' sayers to deter me however. Regards. Ozymandias.

Comment by: Vb on 10th January 2016 at 19:45

Yes he was very curmudgeon and disrespectful -especially when people like yourself do all this for Wigan World voluntarily. It is a fact you can't please everyone. As each comment progresses it starts to become a little different to what presumably was meant originally -with respect! I would not wish to offend anyone intentionally indeed I found some comments very interesting.

Comment by: Garry on 12th January 2016 at 17:56

If the post HAS a Wigan connection which this post clearly does with the cement mixer, then I can't see a problem...Many post on here ie are taken in Blackpool, nowt do with Wigan you might say, but the people DO.
