On its way to Wembley presumably.
Was there electric light signals in 1948
Thank you who put this photo up ,for I remember my dad telling me that he went to Wembley on the train in 1948, so it has special emotions for me.
In those days there were at least a dozen trains taking supporters to Wembley.I went on one at about 6 30 am and the return train was.at 12 30 am on Sunday morning.,getting back to Wigan at 5 30 am and then walking back home in Ince.I was 12 years old at the time.
The first colour lights on test for BR was 1913. They became widespread 1920s.
St Josephs R.C. Church on Caroline St, to the left of the loco.
Wigan beat Bradford 8-3.
St. Joseph's church in the background
one of the men at the front of the loco looks like Bob Stevenson I fired for him in the 60s at Springs branch, he would be the fireman in 1948 I dont know the man in front of him
This would be the fifth month into nationalisation. The engine would soon be given a prefix of 4; thus being 45668. Not as successful as the black five, but these engines were workhorses on all routes in the north of England and the midlands right up till the final months of steam.
While we're on a roll, do any of you lads that worked at the branch remember my brother, Jimmy Lonesome ?
Eddie I remember jimmy lived in garswood older than me started same time as my brother norman at springs branch
The Wigan area got it's colour light signals in the LMS resignalling of 1941 when the ARP boxes were built at Wigan No1, Wigan no2 & Wigan Wallgate.
