The Bolton Evening News - the Saturday evening sports edition - wasn't it a lovely green colour? Or am I just getting sentimental and my grey cells letting me down again - if I'm right then the font used for the football results was also interesting - amazing how these things stay with you - providing I'm right of course.

John, It wasn't green, when I remember it. In fact it was called "The Buff" because of its colour.

John I remember, in the forties, in the evening, in Spring View, I would go round the streets shouting "Buff for sale". I had a newspaper bag full. I think it was Saturday night. As all matches were played on a Saturday. My whole remuneration for the whole week was, seven shillings, and a tanner.

The local Evening Post sports paper which came out on Saturday night was called the Last Football, and I'm sure it was pink in colour, late 1950's -early 1960's.Delivered 40-50 Saturday nights in the winter time only.

Yes Ackky, the early edition of the Post's sports paper was pink. When they'd finished all the reports and updated results and league tables, as I remember, they brought out a later edition on white paper after about 5 o'clock. The Bolton Evening news sports paper was buff. I seem to remember there was green one but don't recall which paper published it.

No John, it was white at first, and later on Pink...Football Pink, published by the Post and Chronicle.

Comment by: John on 19th March 2014 at 21:57

Garry, I'm talking about the mid 1950s when it was still the Lancashire Evening Post (Wigan edition) , before they joined up with the Chronicle (originally from Manchester).

John there`s no point arguing with Garry. He knows everything.

Comment by: Albert. on 20th March 2014 at 15:26

Colin, probably has the answer to all these differing opinions.

Comment by: Jonno on 20th March 2014 at 15:29

As we've all found out VinnieD.You're talking about a different paper altogether Garry.

Most local and regional newspapers printed a football results paper. Most were Pink and hit the streets after 5pm on Saturdays within the football season. Many fans who couldn't go to matches could find out the score of their favorite team and other matches not long after the final whistle. Our local paper the Post & Chronicle printed a Pink edition, but with the ie, advent of the internet and mobile phones, circulation figures went down to a record low. The Manchester Pink for example had a great circulation on Saturday evenings, and on Sunday they even printed a "Sunday Pink" edition. But by the year 2000, the Football Pinks from all newspaper publications started to drop every week, the last edition of the Manchester Football Pink ended in 2005, many other newspapers followed that same direction, that year.

Colin. Have you any recollection of The Buff. I am almost sure it was this paper that I took out on Saturday evening, in the middle, to the late forties, giving the football results.

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 24th March 2014 at 18:10

Sorry Albert, only Buff I know is in the USA.
