Keith. Didn't they manufacture asbestos products, such as conveyor belts, etc. My schoolmate worked there, named Ronnie Williams.

I believe that some of the machinery to make conveyor belts at Turners was transferred to a company in Hull, Fenner.

I worked at Turners in the south block at first doing hand layup on fibreglass, mostly milk van tops, then went on to making typewriter cases and trays, later I transferred to the north block where I was on the big presses doing curing conveyer belts for the mines here and Australia, I never saw any asbestos being manufactured, that's not to say it wasn't used there, its just that in the 2 years I was there I didn't see any

I worked for J.W.Roberts on the Turners sight from 1966-1970. Asbestos was spun and woven into a fabric and impregnated with a resin. I also played in their rugby union team on a pitch that closely resembled a swamp after heavy rain. At lunchtime I enjoyed a quick game of lawn bowls alongside the canteen.

I worked at Turners from 1974 for 28years and I never experienced any signs of asbestos, I'm not saying it wasn't there because it must have been at some time that was how the plant started but I remember when I started it was called TBA Industrial Products Ltd. then went on to be TBA Belting and is now Contitech UK Ltd.
