Got my first TV from Bob Bell. A second hand black and white model. That was in 1974 when I got married.

I got married in 1974 too, Ron. Gladys, how lovely to see Edwards' Warrington Road shop and Bell Radio once more; I never thought I would see that scene again. Thankyou!

Thank you so much for this memory. I used to love going there, the food was always of the best quality & everyone was so friendly.

We only moved to Platt Bridge in 1971. What did Naylor's sell, please?

Lived in Abram all my life and i dont remember Naylors shop.I knew it as Salters Chemist.

Anne, when we first moved to Platt Bridge in 1971, Salter's Chemist was across the road from where it was in recent years, at the end of the row of houses which used to house Arthur's dental surgery, near the old tram-lines, and right opposite the Naylor's shop shown on the above photo. I think they took over Edwards' premises.

To Irene Roberts/ As I recall in 1954 I used to go into Naylors to buy dinky toy cars and trucks. The shop window to the left hand side of door as you went in was a large display of dinky toys. I think it was basically a toy shop if my memory serves me right. I remember they sold hornby train sets and dolls prams, other viewers maybe able to elaborate further. Whenever my mother took me to Dr Mckinnons, always used to have a good look at what was new in the display window. Then it was off round the corner to catch the trolley bus back home, such memories I was only 8yrs old, it seems like yesterday.

Thankyou, Flintsone. It is good to hear of such happy memories.

Further to flintstone's comments, In the post-war 1940s Naylor's shop was a Mecca for Dinky toys and Hornby & Hornby Dublo train sets. They also sold cycles - I got my first two-wheeler from there in 1950 - a New Hudson tourer, single speed, tin mudguards. In the 1950s they also sold TVs - from, I think, the part of the shop out of frame on the right. My father bought a Philips TV from there, about 1954 - 14" screen, black & white - remember it was 119 guineas = £124 19s 0d - goodness knows how much that is equal to now

An awful lot of money then, Arthur!

Naylors would also put away toys for you. I would go in and ask him to put away Dinky and Corgi cars... and then pay so much a week, once paid for I would take them home. They would only let me put one at a time away. otherwise I would have put the shop window away!

This way I got...

James Bond 007 Aston Martin
Captain Scarlets Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle
Thunderbirds RR Lady Penelope Car
The Saints Volvo
Thunderbird 2

... and I STILL have them. :-D

My first bike, a Raleigh Chopper was from there, again paid for with a Christmas Club... sadly... I no longer have that!

Only just seen your comment, Dennis; been at 1940s events all weekend. Lovely memories! And yes, we had to put things away and pay for them gradually.....it did us no harm and taught us the value of things.

Hello Gladys I am Arthur Moore from Tram Street. It's great to see all the photos of the Bakery. It brings back a load of memorys. Mary lived adjoining to the Bakery; I should know because my mam Alice Moore sent me around at night when the shop was closed for a 2lb bag of sugar. Mary lived with her mum Grandma Edwards. Mary was my favourite. The bakery girls of 1958, 4th from the left was Mrs Farrimond. She lived in the first house facing the Bakery and 2nd from the right was Edna Walke. Mary was behind Edna. The photo of the shop in the 1960's brings back memories. Bertha was also one of my favourites. Gladys, can you remember when we played tennis on Abram Park with Jim Ramsbottom, Joe Walker and another girl called Freda. That's going back some years. I also remember Mrs Garner from New Street. Love to hear from you Gladys and anyone else who can remember me or my brother Vince Moore.
