Rose Bridge Junction Then & Now
Rose Bridge Junction Then & Now

A then & now view of what was Rose Bridge Junction on the Whelley Loop Line.
The then shot dates back to July 1965 & was bought from G&I models by myself in the late 1980s.
The 1965 view shows 48730 working a northbound freight past Rose Bridge Junction.
In the foreground is the site of the curve that went round to Kirkless Hall Junction & the former flag & tarmacadam works.

The now shot was taken by myself (circa 2005) from exactly the same location (the rabbit rocks)& shows Rose Bridge Junction long after the railway had been closed & lifted.

The train's just passed over Belle Green Lane and is heading towards the iron bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool canal and will most likely join the WCML at Standish.
Thanks for sharing Harry.

Any freight trains or steam locos requiring water at that water column/tank at Rose Bridge, had to whistle a code on the locos whistle when approaching Whelley Junction Signal Box,(the code was one long blast & Three short ones).
Sounding the code would inform the signalmen en route that the train would be stopped in section for a while between Roundhouse & De Trafford to take on water.
(thats if someone hadnt drained the tank, that is). :-(

Harry, what would the small shed at the side of the track have been used for?

Comment by: Harry Gardner on 2nd March 2012 at 23:52

The old hut was probably used a Permanent Way hut/cabin for the P Way trackmen Garry.
Huts like that were sometimes used to store parts & tools etc by the P way department who maintained the line etc
