The main attraction for me that day, was to see this Bedford lorrie, fully restored by the owners of Walsh Transport, now S&W Garages Atherton. S&W (Steven Walsh) Garages carried out most of Kwik Save's body and fabrication work at that time.

Is it a short-wheelbase Bedford 'O' type?

Good photo Colin of the little truck, when I took trailers to
s+w Steve Walsh used to say, can I back in for you he loved
to drive artics I remember carnival day very well we should
have had more of them at K S. Thanks for putting the photo
on Colin D.C.

Correct Prisus, it's a Bedford O-type platform, built in Luton from 1931 and continued in production until 1953. This truck was very similar to the Austin K2, and both of these small light commercials were seen not too long ago, plodding around our streets delivering coal to houses.

Hi Derrick, yes they were great times going upto S&W, they always made us welcome with a pot of tea, I think they tried to reverse the trailer in the garage first time like you use to do, not many could drive HGVs like DC, you could make them trucks go. I remember collecting the bosses (AJ) coach from S&W some years ago, I can't think of the make of it, but the year must have been the late 50s or early 60s. What an experience that was to drive it....the reg was SAX ???.

from Hindley to Leeds on night trunk the two strokes used to

Hi Colin, nice photo, When I started work in 1963 for White Star they had one of these with the Luton body, Allen Bros builders New Springs also had some short wheelbase tippers 3 & 5 tons. Anyone who holidays on Malta will tell you many of these little trucks can still be seen working for a living and they are kept in tip-top condition.

Gary, it's definitely a Bedford O-type (I was there that day) to be fair it is similar to the Austin K2, but this is a Bedford in every way.

Comment by: Garry on 19th September 2014 at 15:58

I'll go with that. I use to help coal bagging and we had a Austin or it might have been a Bedford, it was one or the other anyway. Has colin says, they look the same!

Comment by: Garry on 19th September 2014 at 16:12
