works day outing

These proud men (many who are no longer with us) pose for the works outing in Mesnes Park, they are from two full blooded Wigan newspapers, The Wigan Observer and The Wigan Examiner. The Wigan Evening Post&Chronicle (a subdivision of the Preston based Lancashire Evening Post) was only founded in the 50s. Sadly in 1961, the Wigan Examiner based in King St ceased publication, and many of their employees joined the Wigan Observer. During the mid 60s, the Wigan Observer reached a circulation of over 50,000 copies a week, one of the biggest in the country for a paid for weekly.

The gent at the front centre with his hands on his knees is Ralph Wall, the grandson of Thomas Wall, the founder of the Wigan Observer. Ralph was managing director from 1922 until his death in 1957.
