a couple of fotos of pit tallies from the pits i worked at.worked being the operative word!!!! after receiving an e-mail from an ex miner i worked with. telling me about the tunnellers documentary. 5 men to use a holman drilling machine. you had to manage on your own being a contractor. anyway my parsonage tally takes pride of place in my picture. and if you look closely you will see it's damaged and battered. the fitters and lekkys out there will remember. during the period i worked ungerground. the metric system came into being. and as we had not been issued with metric spanners at the time, you used to have to use shimmimgs. i.e. washers or a screwdriver blade.in this case pit tally to take up the slack in the spanner!!! especially on the panzer bolts..... but with a good 4lb hammer you could cut them off quicker than undo them. i remember 5 good blows if they was solid. if anyone has a parkside and agecroft tally they dont want? they would help to complete my tally collection.
cheers roy

Roy I'd have sworn 782 was my number at Parsonage. I thought you were going to say the damage to the Tally was when Eric Smith shot you an' it saved yer life lol.
Do you still send him a Xmas card.
I always thought a good chisel was better than a spanner especially on the sprocket bolts.
Now I think about it, maybe mine was 772

I worked at Parsonage from 1960 to 1970. My tally number was 402. I was Harry cornfields clerk.
