Situated on George Stephenson's pioneering Bolton and Leigh railway (the first public railway in Lancashire) opened in 1828; this is Daubhill signal box. We are looking towards Bolton and the later 1885 deviation line is visible curving away to the right dropping down past Daubhill station (platforms visible by the bridge) on a prodigous gradient to rejoin the original line at Fletcher St. junction. The original 1828 single line worked by stationary engine and ropes can be seen passing immediately to the right of the signal box. Also visible are the catch points to send any runaways into the sand drag and safety! I have no date for the photo which appeared on a calendar many moons ago, but I would estimate it at around 1950 ish. The bridges still stand to this day but of course all the cuttings are filled in just like in good old Wigan!
The original photo is credited on this calendar to Mr. H.D. Bowtell.

Being born in 1987 I missed out on viewing this, I live 50 yards from this site and would of loved to have seen this in its day. I work on the railway, it is a shame its all gone! Would of loved to travel up through Hulton park to Bolton! Bring back the line to Leigh :)

I lived in Smethurst Lane as a young boy in the late 1950's
when Daubhill Station had already been knocked down and the site covered by advertising hoardings.I also remember playing football on Hulton Lane playing fields and once saw the steam
from the engine and heard the noise of clacking carriages. It seems that this could have a holiday train to North Wales destinations or a rugby special to Leigh or Wigan.Happy days from an era which has long disappeared sadly.
