The old bus station in Hope Street. This is the early 1980s after the St Helens stop had been moved. There used to be a milk vending machine just to the right of the bus which was very popular on Sunday mornings with people who had been to the Casino the night before.

The Morrisons store which you can see the sign of was Dave Whelans original shop. He sold it to Morrisons then bought JJBs. The rest is history

Peter, looking at the photo. it's the building on the left of Morrisons, which was 'The Room At The Top' The building on the right was the SAVOY chippy. You don't get chips like they made, anymore.

On the site of Dave Whelans supermarket was Ormrods carpet warehouse. and at the very end of the row was Grimshaw and Culshaws Dairy, I'm not sure but I think it became Smiths dairy

My mate and I used to cruise around Wigan in the early hours in his Hillman Minx. First stop was the milk machine. The milk was always so cold it took your breath away when drinking it. Delicious! Funny thing is, I no longer drink milk... can no longer stand the stuff.

I remember the milk vending machine, it had orange juice in cartons as well and there was one of the old chocolate vending machines that sold bars for an old 6d. There was a cafe in the bus station building at one time, was it called "The Baked Potato?"

This is Ribble Leyland National 387 PTF733L and was a Wigan depot bus. It became a North Western in 1986, number 205.
