In this photo Harold Barker and colleagues testing fire equipment, approx year 1954.
Not sure if this is Alexandra Colliery in Whelley or Dairy Colliery in New Springs.
Comments welcome.

Dunno' about the Alex, but I believe the Dairy Pit was a wet pit, hence the wellies. My Bro' did a spell there after Johnpit closed

I think I would favour the Dairy Pit as the location as well.
The building in the background seems to be of a more modern design than would have been at the Alex.
Alex closed in 1955 and Dairy 1961/62

Is the inscription "DP" on the inverted fire extinguisher an indication of which pit?

Comment by: Stephen on 8th July 2009 at 21:12

The date on the extinguisher is '59 therefore after the Alex closed

Thanks dave, yes that right Brian Gore, he was very gullible
you could talk him into anything, did you hear about pulling the cat across the cut at Bridge Pit, or walking across the settling pool at the back of the baths at Alex.
If you would like to know let me know.
Ken
