This photo was taken where we had the school airraid shelter during the war running along that edge almost to the wood, never had to go in for real but had to practice with your gasmask every week or so

Great photo Bert, how come it's taken you so long to publish it? I think it's "Top Class 1959". I remember nearly everybody. The girl in front of Cliff Dean isn't she Dorothy Chisnall rather than Ann? The lad second from left on the mat is Jackie Culiffe. Is that your sister Mary on the other side of Irene Armstrong from you?

hi lyndon ive only just found the photo it was given to our mary of david lowe before he went living in spaina while ago.yes that is mary next but one to me and it is anne chisnall at the end .i thought it was jack cunliffe but he is on the one year younger .cant remember it all i think there was two classes at that age because theres no dave roberts or cliff ward or john knowles plus others perhaps memmoryis on the way out ha ha

Bert, I think you might be right about there being two top classes because on the photo that I published there's no Malc.Topping, Jimmy Glover, Adrian Barton etc. Both Jack Cunliffe and Linda Barton are on my brother's class photo as well as yours. Upstairs in the old school there were three classrooms. The first was Mr.Berry's then Miss Cross's then Mr.Brown's but I don't remember being in Mr.Berry's class. Maybe the youngsters Sue and Kath can sort it Ha Ha. The lad sat on the mat (extreme left) I think is the elder brother of Diane Haselden from Spindle Hillock, but I wouldn't put money on it.

hi bert and lyndon there is another photo,i was in top class two years as my birthday is in september, the photo i have got as john knowles and myself on but not some of the ones on this photo. at the moment i have not got a scanner but we are after getting one so i will put it on when i can

Diane Haselden didn't have any brothers Lyndon, just a younger sister Denise. What Judith is saying helped me remember that when I was in top class two girls, Katherine Lowe & Kathleen Hill from the year above stayed behind for another year in the top class, I think this had to do with when their birthdays were. Same can be said for the picture Susan Catterall has put on here 1959/60, as I can see there are 3 age groups on there all in the same class - very confusing, but these pictures are a joy to see.

Sue, I think you are right about birthdays and class appearances. I can't think of any other explanation, but then memory is not what it was. The lad on the mat being Diane's brother was a shot in the dark, I somehow connected the two. As you say the photos are a joy to see, each face brings back happy memories; although it can be aggravating when you can't put a name to a face you've known for 50 years.
