MR WHITEHEAD WOODWORK TEACHER IS ON THE BACK ROW FIRST LEFT

Comment by: R Gallagher on 2nd November 2008 at 20:35

Yes it is Mr Whitehead. The teachers on the right-hand side are Miss Ball, english and games teacher, Miss Hague, cookery teacher and Mr Swift, geography teacher. I just wonder if anyone recognises any of the pupils who would now be in their 60's.

Comment by: DENNIS CARROLL on 8th November 2008 at 22:02

what happened to mr swift

Comment by: R Gallagher on 16th November 2008 at 11:26

Hi Dennis - If Mr Swift is still around he would possibly be in his 80's or even a bit older. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone else is still around who is on this photo as no-one except yourself has made any comment!! I'll keep checking just in case you never know. :-)

Comment by: David Jones on 12th December 2008 at 15:13

It was Keith Rowles not Rolls. He came as a teacher as I left. He is me cousin and is retired living in Hasslingdon, Rossendale

Comment by: Tom on 19th January 2009 at 18:03

Left kneeling,Fred Moss, right kneeling,Kenny Green, girl standing next to Mr Swift, Kath Howard, next to her Agnes Greenhalgh, and Eric Pugh, standing at back with hat, information from my cousin Keith Ainscough.

Comment by: Ruth G on 21st January 2009 at 21:41

Hi Tom - yes it is Kenny Green and the lad in the middle with the hat is Michael Coupe who I believe now lives in New Zealand and became an editor of a newspaper. Glad your cousin Keith recognised one or two more. I keep checking now and again to see if any more names come up.

Comment by: Tom on 23rd January 2009 at 21:18

Hello Ruth, one more, the girl at the back next to Mr Whitehead, Doreen Highway?. Without being to disrespectful in my old age, we used to call Mr Swift, buggy. Happy days !

Comment by: Ruth on 24th January 2009 at 11:12

Tom - You are right that was the nickname for Mr Swift. I would struggle to remember why now but he was already teaching at Moss Lane when I started. One or two other names on the pic could be, in front of Mr Whitehead, June Pearson? At the back me (can't believe it!!) Patricia Pendlebury, Joan Walsh, Margaret Hedley, and I think Anne Ellison. Are you or your cousin on here? They were happy days Tom with a strict but fair Headmaster - Mr Rimmer.

Comment by: Tom on 25th January 2009 at 12:40

NO I'm not on it Ruth, and I d'ont think Keith is on.Two more teachers from my days at Moss Lane, were Mr Tunstall and Mrs Byron.

Comment by: Ruth on 28th January 2009 at 10:29

Tom that was a big NO! Yes I do remember Mr Tunstall and Mrs Byrom both were very good teachers. They were definitely "in charge" of their classes. Mr Tunstall always reminded me of a major in the army (he taught maths). Mrs Byrom taught English (and she also taught the girls how to make their own clothes). Will keep checking for more info.

Comment by: Ruth G on 9th February 2009 at 17:59

After looking at the second picture I think Marlene Bleasdale is also on this pic. and another name alongside her could be Marion Groves.

Comment by: brenda foster former bennett on 20th February 2009 at 14:10

would love to know if any body remembers me

Comment by: Ruth on 21st February 2009 at 12:50

Hi Brenda - When did you attend Moss Lane? Did you live in Sp/Vw?

Comment by: Mike Coope on 23rd February 2009 at 22:22

Hello Ruth - How on earth did you know I live in New Zealand and became a newspaper editor? I have never bothered to explore these sites previously but did so on impulse - to discover I was mentioned in dispatches.
What was your name at school? Brindle?

It's a bad photo but can recognise Eric Whithead & Peter Swift,(Buggy). The last time I saw Buggy was about 25yrs ago he was crossing the road at Orrell post traffic lights, you've guessed it, he was drunk as a monkey. Ha Ha Haa

Miss Ball beceme Mrs Thornton, was our form teacher in 3A and 4i (year 4 stopped using A,B streams etc)became 4i and 4ii.I beleive she got married when I was in year 1. (think I must have had a crush on her)

Comment by: Gordon Topping on 10th May 2012 at 18:05

I remember Mr. Whitehead well, the woodworking teacher, first thing he taught us and I never forgot that, is a tool without a makers name on it is worthless!!!!

Comment by: JOHN BAILEY on 29th July 2012 at 13:02

HI ARTHUR YOUR MEMORIES PLAYING TRICKS ON YOU,MARLENE BLEASDALE WAS IN MY CLASS,YOU WERE TWO YEARS ABOVE IN THE SAME YEAR AS BALMER,AND JIMMY NEEDHAM.

Comment by: arthur moore on 11th October 2012 at 18:11

Hello John, I've only just got on the computer and spotted your name. It's nice to hear from you. I can remember when we was having our tonsils out in the same ward at Wigan Infirmary (and Kenny Morris as well). Just wondering if you are still playing snooker. If you are, I can give you a good game anytime at Abram Labour Club. John - I thought you was 5 years older than me! Ha Ha just kidding! I wonder if you heard about poor Marlene Bleasdale, she passed away a few weeks ago. Anyway, please get in touch - Arthur
P.s If you are reading this Ruth, I wonder how you are getting on as well. Not heard from you for a bit.

And Marion Groves as well - never seen you since I was 14 years old.

Comment by: Ruth on 12th October 2012 at 13:31

Hello again Arthur - Hope you are keeping fine too. I take a look at the site now and again so I'm glad I did today. Sorry to hear about Marlene Bleasdale though. I hadn't seen her since school days and I think you tend to remember someone as they were at that time. You mentioned Marion Groves and I don't know why but I have a feeling that she moved abroad. Perhaps someone (maybe) will say if this is right or not. Not many have commented on Moss Lane for a while have they? I'll look again soon just in case!! All the best.

Hi Eileen, good to hear from you. I remember being invited to Margery's when you were "home" a few years ago but unfortunately couldn't make it. I know one or two on this photo were there with you though. Sorry I missed you. I check now and again to see if anyone else puts any messages on here but they seem very few and far between nowadays. All the very best Eileen to you and your family.

Comment by: Ruth on 19th November 2013 at 22:05
