Fred.
Don't know about it being the Bluecoat school as you say, during the 1950's it was a police garage for their police cars, and I'm pretty certain it was used, by what was called the County Police, rather than Wigan Police force in those days.The Bluecoat School was at the other end of Hallgate situated where the present Bus station office is now on the corner of Frog Lane and Hallgate.

This building(The oldest building in Wigan) was the original Bluecoat School. It moved to the corner of Hallgate/Frog Lane later. When the number of pupils increased.

Yes this was definitly The Old Bluecoat School before the other two were built. I was a pupil at the newer school from 1972-1978, and I remember being told the history of the school and the Parish Church. I also used to live just across the road at the address which is now the T&G.

This may clear things up about the Bluecoat School:
<quote>
The Bluecoat School stands at the foot of Wigan Parish Church. It was the first school in Wigan built in 1773.

It has had a chequered history, being a Police Garage during the war also a home for Social Services furniture. It was given back to church in the early 80's and is used for coffee and meetings after services

My grandfather attended the National Blue Coat School in Wigan from 1905 - 1914 approx. The headmaster was Mr Langshaw. Would this have been in this building or in the one at Lower Hallgate?
