Photo is circa 1958. Not sure what they are dressed up for. My sister Janet is on back row in the middle with glasses on. Audrey Robinson is 2nd from right back row and Eileen Aincough is also on back row.

Are you sure it is Ince central and not St Marys

Comment by: Garry on 4th August 2015 at 12:46

St William's church in the background...old Ince Central it is.

Comment by: Cyril on 4th August 2015 at 15:18

St William's? That's Keble Street Methodist Church Garry. ;-)

Comment by: Garry on 4th August 2015 at 17:00

So it is, Cyril.

Comment by: TonyG on 4th August 2015 at 17:52

Definitely Keble St Methodist. Nothing like St Williams.

Comment by: Jimmy, on 4th August 2015 at 17:58

gibo,not St Mary's,that's were I went 1954-1958.

Comment by: Albert. on 4th August 2015 at 19:49

Wasn't Ince Central School,on the opposite side of Ince Green Lane, from St William's?.

Comment by: irene roberts on 4th August 2015 at 19:50

Definitely Ince Central School Yard, when the school was where Central Flats stand now.

Comment by: George on 4th August 2015 at 20:18

A lovely photo of a very happy group of children - thanks for posting.

No way is that Ince Central I went there from 1945 till 1952 and it's not a place you forget

Comment by: G .W. on 5th August 2015 at 06:21

This is turning out like a tour of Wigan. Where are we now?

Comment by: Stephen Price on 5th August 2015 at 08:34

If you look on Album> Schools> Ince Central you will see a photo of the 1953 sports team. It has the identical buildings in the background.

Comment by: Garry on 5th August 2015 at 12:02

I'll go back to where I started...It's St William's Church in the background

Comment by: Bill F on 5th August 2015 at 14:48

That is the gable end of the house at the junction of Keble St and School St,with Keble St church in the background, all still standing(go and look)!!

Comment by: irene roberts on 5th August 2015 at 15:02

Garry, I lived next door to St. Williams until I was 18, and that is not St. Williams. It is the old Ince Central school yard with Keble St. Methodist Church in the background. I'm sure Stephen Price, who uploaded the photo, knows which school his sister Janet and her friends Audrey and Eileen went to.

Comment by: Ray on 5th August 2015 at 16:19

This is Keble St Methodist church. It can clearly be seen that the building has lancet windows.
St William's has narrow 'double arch' windows, which look nothing like the ones in the photo, and also has wings built out from either side of the building.
Check Google images and Google street view.

I think the intention of the photo is being lost. It shows Ince Central pupils apparently enjoying their day. I was hoping people would be able to put names to faces rather than put gables to buidings.

Comment by: Dave Stephens on 5th August 2015 at 20:59

Okay. So who can name the children??

Comment by: irene roberts on 5th August 2015 at 22:15

I would love to, Stephen, but am not old enough; I probably started school here in the year this photo was taken, but know it is Ince Central School Yard. It is a lovely photo of times past; Thankyou for posting.

Fourth from the right back row, Eileen Ainscough.

This is the corner of thee Infants playground. Where the children are standing were two air raid shelters when I was there from 1940.We had regular evacuations to see how quickly we could get into them in the event of an air raid.

Comment by: Alan H on 6th August 2015 at 14:15

Further to my earlier comment, Mr Tom Gerrard who was headmaster of the Junior School had a movie camera and filmed the evacuations. He would show us them and then play them backwards to much amusement. he also did film shows on Friday afternoons when he would show us Charlie Chaplin , Keystone Cops films and others. We were issued with gas masks at Keble Street church which we had to carry with us at all times. Those were the days!

Comment by: Albert. on 6th August 2015 at 20:04

Alan.H. I went to St Mary's at the same time. Somebody provided us with plenty of comics to look at. Wasn't it about this time, school dinners came about. I recollect, meat & potato pie, with baked beans.

Albert, I wonder if you remember Mrs. Round from St. Mary's? I knew her from the year 2000 from my associations with Wigan Little Theatre. She lived to 100 and her memory was amazing! She remembered so many pupils from St. Mary's, and I have seen former pupils, (grown men!) quake when buying ice-creams from Mrs. Round when she has asked them to add up their purchases! And she remembered them all! An amazing lady.

A misdemeanour from any member of this crew must have been honest and therefore easily excusable; it's impossible to detect deceit in any one of them. I'm sure the character on the extreme right of the picture would have personally seen to it that 'jollity in the classroom' was maintained at all times.

Comment by: Albert. on 7th August 2015 at 11:06

Irene. I certainly do remember Mrs Round, a lovely lady. My mother used to speak to her on regular occasion in later years. Mr Entwhistle was the head master of both infants', and juniors. Miss Ormerod, Miss Kenyon, and Miss Naylor, were teachers' in the infant section. When I went into the juniors, Miss Marsden was my teacher. I went to Spring View Seniors, in Spring, 1945.

Comment by: Albert. on 7th August 2015 at 13:53

Copied from Wilkipedia. In 1944 it was made compulsory for local authorities to provide school dinners, with legal nutritional requirements. Free school meals were available to children with families on very low incomes.[3] As a result, staple traditional "school dinner" foods became embedded in the national psyche from the 1950s onwards. Irene,Mrs Round was Headmistress when I started at St Mary's 1953. Still remember meeting her on my first Day with my Mam.Another good Teacher was Miss Fairclough who lived at the top of Westwood Lane. From 12/15i was her Paper Boy always gave me a good tip at Christmas.

Comment by: Elizabeth Fairclough on 23rd August 2015 at 16:01

I went to Ince Central and we moved to the new school in Charles Street in 1958, so I believe this photo was taken earlier that same year. Jean Ashurst was in the same class as me, also Paul Fern (boy stood on far left)and Sidney Gaskell (3rd boy from right, front row). It seems to be a mixture of 6 and 7 year olds, so probably a PE class. They do look a very happy bunch of children, and everyone I ever see who went to Ince Central only ever seem to have happy memories, me included.
