I think the photo was taken on the pebble beach outside the castle walls whilst we all ate our butties. It must be prior to summer '65 as there is a mixture of school ages and some had left by then for secondary schools, mainly to Rose Bridge and Hindley and Abram GS,
That's me in the blue balaclava. I never took it off all winter and spring.
I can put names to most on the front row but will let others have their two penneth beforehand

I think it may be Ian Price sat next to you Bill. Could be Stey Whittle in grey top.

Looks like Ken Michenson front left.

I think the lad third from left is Stephen Isherwood, and the lad with the glasses to the right of Stephen Whittle surname was Worden and he lived opposite the school in Pickup Street. Who is the male teacher in the background ( assuming he is one and with the school) ? Only two I knew we're Mr Heaton and Mr Fairchild ?.

John, do you mean Peter Isherwood.

Ken Mitchenson,?, Peter Isherwood, Mary Rafferty,?,?,Stephen Price,Ian Price.Have you still got the balaclava Billy? it would keep you warm in winter walking from the Anvil to the Raven,John Bull and the other watering holes in Wigan.

Some good guesses and some not quite so.
Front row l to r, Ken Mitch, now sadly passed, next to Ken could be Mark Unsworth , but I could be completely wrong, Pee Isherwood, Mary Rafferty ( good call Carol)Ste Whittle, Tom Potts, Brian Cumberbirch, Ian Price and me. Don't know the girl next to me who looks like she's relishing a pie or summat, or the others.
The only one I can put a name to at the back is on the extreme left, Ann Bretherton - whose dad I had the pleasure of sharing a beer with recently- and next to Ann isn't a teacher but the coach driver, who I think also took several of us on a week long school trip to Westward Ho! around the same time. Cheers all.

Stephen, thanks for correcting me with Peter Isherwood, and Billy you are definately right with Tom Potts. Westward Ho. Never forget that trip. I went in 1966 when it snowed, and the chalets were bloody freezing !

You didn't half make me smile, John. That Westward Ho! trip was at Easter 1965. It would have been a month or so before I turned ten. Me mam and dad only decided to let me go at the last minute and I was billeted in them freezing chalets with Ray Hesketh, Brian Cumberbirch and Stey Bamber.
Three things stick in my mind: Being so homesick on the frst night I ran scriking to the headmaster - Mr Lowe's, chalet til he calmed me down ; all the girls changing their clothes about six times like it was a fashion parade ( no change there then ) on the first full day and winning a tanner from teacher Miss Morgan for dancing like Mick Jagger to the Stones' hit, ''Last Time''.
Oh and a fourth thing. Me and Ian Price doing our sneaky best to nick a mucky book ( Flirt 'n Skirt') from the local shop!!

Westward Ho quote made me laugh and i did not go on the trip, but i did get 4 postcards sent to me all from boys,my dad was not very pleased, thought they should be still playing marbles at their age, wonder what he would have said if he knew about the of nicking of dirty mags. LOL

I think the girl eating a pie next to you Bill is Karen Shepherd

I was in my third year when I went to Westward Ho camp. Think everyone was homesick on the first night. I shared a chalet with Bill Lowe, Alan Daniels and Dave Roden, and it was that cold after the first night we pulled all the sheets and blankets off the bunk beds and doubled up in the singles. There was a prize for the tidiest chalet but we couldn't be bothered.. Never went on any other week long trips but remember going to Chester Zoo, on a day trip at the end of year, and New Brighton another year with a trip on the Royal Iris ferry when more than one kid was seasick on the Mersey.
