Sacred Heart football team in Smith Cup final played at Springfield Park 1957/58 season (lost 1-0 to St Josephs?)
Back row: Myself, Mr Kennedy(Head),Paul Doherty, Barry Edwards, Lawrence McCintyre,Jimmy Joint, Mr Mannion,Kevin Rose.
Middle row: John Higgins, John McCabe, James Baldwin, George Walsh, Brian Holleron,.
Bottom row: David Peel, Stanley Hoolin, sorry ???, ? Carter.
I remember Mr Mannion telling us that he was not giving us a "Hotpot Party" to celebrate but he was getting each of us a small medal which we could treasure and show our grandchildren in years to come. I have two 10 yr old grandsons but still waiting for the medal!!
Hope everybody is keeping fit and can still WALK the length of a football pitch!!

Mr Kennedy, he was an old customer of the Wellfield Hotel, Beech Hill. I believe he acted as an interpreter during the war in some capacity or other. He told me he took early retirement many years ago because of ill health. Walked with the aid of a walking stick and was rarely seen without his pipe. He was always ready to offer me advice on my future career in teaching. A genial and considerate soul.

Hi Peter. I remember it well. The missing name is - Jimmy Speed and (John) Carter.I'm sorry to say I belive that Barry Edwards has passed away. What a team - we called ourselves the 'Red Devils' after the great Man Utd team.If I remember rightly - your mum made the best jam butties in Wigan.I'd have loved to have shown my 5 Grandchildren that 1st medal.Anyone else out there on this photo - send a message.

I was once told that, during WW2, Mr Kennedy was high up on the Nazi Death List(something to do with radio broadcasts). Never found out whether it was true or not.
