Is that Mr Jenkinson on the back row? If so this is pre 1983 as he sadly died before I left in 1983.

Comment by: Maureen Johnson on 24th November 2009 at 17:42

Yes, it is Mr Jenkinson on the back row, so you must be right that the photo is pre 83 - couldn't remember the year.

Comment by: Mike from Calgary on 27th November 2009 at 14:40

Mr. Jenkinson was one of the best teachers ever to grace any school. I remember the day we were told he had died. It was a sad day and I think all the kids liked him.

this photo is definately before 1983 because sister patricia is not on and she took me for needlework- good times ha ha and looking at those moustaches its more like late 1970s

Comment by: Maureen on 7th February 2010 at 20:13

Sister Patricia is just in front of Mr Doyle on the top right hand side - you can just about see her glasses and veil. Yes, it was a sad day when Mr Jenkinson died, he was such a character and had the unique ability to make people laugh.

This looks very like it was taken while I was a pupil (or immediately after I left in 1977). Not clear enough to spot everyone but can see Mr Costello on extreme left of front row, also Mr. Northey, Miss Whittle, possibly Mr. Brennan, Mr. Holland, Mr. Holden & Mr. Nevin on front row. Second row includes Mr. Sharples, Mr. Lancaster & possibly Mrs. Walker at the end. Third row Mr. Callan & Mr. Murphy. Near the back are Mr. Jenkinson, Mr. McRae, Mr. Lumb, Mr. Ogden, Mr. Phillips (current Headteacher!) just behind Rabbit on left is Mr. Mather. Think the young guy top left at the back might be Mr. Mannion. If Peter Phillips is there, then his bride-to-be Miss Probert ought to be as well.

Comment by: bizarreloverectangle on 27th February 2010 at 13:57

One or two more dredged from the rusty bucket of my memory. Miss Gore (aka Mrs Summers) 3rd from left front row. Miss Flannery (aka. Mrs I've forgotten - sorry!) in red also on front row & possibly Miss Unsworth (aka Mrs Marsh) just behind her. Possibly Mr F Littler left of centre second row from back. I'm a bit hopeless with the ladies in the picture (just like in real life - ha!) so instead some of my teachers that I ought to see there, but as yet can't include Mr. Battersby, Mr,. Conroy, Mr. Ledgard(?), Mr. Mayor, Miss Hawkins, the previously mentioned Miss Probert (Mrs. Phillips), Miss Cottam, Mrs Simm, Mr Lawton, the non-Orrell RUFC playing Mr V. Littler, Mrs Wilde. Miss Flannery's married name is going to bug me now, I'm sure...

in 1975 i was a first year, and on fri afternoon, last 2 lessons we had double science with mr rabbit, ithink he was head of 3rd year ( i may be wrong ). i remember to this day, and iwill never forget it, what happened on that 1st fri afternoon. this older pupil came in for 6 of the best of mr rabbitt with the pump (trainer) i think he was just trying to scare us, by punising him in front of us 1st years, the lad in question screamed in agony...ifelt sick.ahh happy days. ps inever got the pump..ha ha.

Comment by: paul h on 26th January 2013 at 23:42

not 1983/84 i started in 84. Mr kenny was head, can see mr Behan f row far right with mrs Walker behind,Mr Holland f row 5 frm right, Mather f row far left. Can,t see Rabbit or Brennan

Comment by: Mike Hughes on 28th March 2013 at 08:47

Adding to the names: Mr Boardman (Art) Far left, third row up, Mr Woodhouse (German) Back row, fifth from right, in front of him Mrs Berry (English), Mr Mayor (P.E.) Back row in line with door frame, Miss Sweeney (Home Economics) second row up, second from right. To her left either Miss Probert or Miss Grayson (German).

First time Ive seen this photo in over 30 years, I can recognise many of the faces but some seem to be missing: Miss Johnson (German), Mr Conroy (French), Mr Simpson (Metalwork), Mr Ledgard (German) possibly the person in front of Mr Philips. There was also another Mr Holland that taught science and a young lady teacher for Maths, can picture her but forget her name. Also a lady teacher for English, we called her Max Factor because of her make up style.

I think left part of second row up is office staff and theres a group of ladies on the right that I dont recognise.

Absence of Mr Simpson makes me think this was taken in 1978 as I think he started in 1979, the year that I left.

R.I.P. Norman Jenkinson.

I started in 1983 and Mr Kenny was head. Also lookikng at Father Johnson (he was my parish priest in Liverpool before I came to Wigan), he dosent look that much older when i left liverpool so i reckon its about 79 /80. Agree with one of the comments above - best time of our lives ..... but we just didnt know it!! Best wishes to all x

Comment by: brian on 6th February 2018 at 23:34

teachers from hell for me, Mr Rabbit was scary, some should never have been allowed near children

Comment by: Margaret Duffy on 7th June 2018 at 17:56

This picture is definitely before 1983. I attended in 1975 and left in 1980. Just wondering if this could have been taken as a retirement picture for Mr Harding as he left half way through my time there. Mr Kenny was headmaster when l left. I was there when the school was on fire twice. I was unlucky enough to get Mr Rabbit for 4 years out of the five years l was there.

St Edmund Arrowsmith RC high school is located next to Byrchall C of E high school. Never knew the reason why the two schools were built next to each other.

this photo would have been taken around end of school year 1979 for mr hardings retirement . I attended from 1975 to 1980 , he retired at the end of my fourth year. those were the best days of our lives or so they tell you .

Comment by: Tim Hilton on 25th August 2020 at 08:28

Comment by: mark prayle on 3rd February 2023 at 17:08

many taught me, they were greats, fantastic school. I thank them all. Any imperfections, well i was far from perfect myself, and they recognised and supported that.
